Dr. Marco Cervantes

Dr. Marco Cervantes, also known as DJ Mexstep, was interviewed on November 22, 2025, at the Department of Race, Ethnicity, Gender and Sexuality Studies on the UT San Antonio Downtown Campus. He is from Houston and talks about how the Houston sound shaped his style before he moved to San Antonio to start graduate school at UT San Antonio. Inspired by his childhood and the way he grew up, Marco wrote about the Black and Brown experience and created stories that support his community before he became a professor at UT San Antonio. He now teaches college classes about the Black and Brown experience and also brings what he teaches into the community. You can find Marco leading workshops and DJ-ing around San Antonio. He also performs with a music group called Third Root.
